In 1999, Nuraini Juliastuti co-founded KUNCI Cultural Studies Center, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Her education background includes MSc in Contemporary Asian Studies (University of Amsterdam) and PhD in Cultural Anthropology (Leiden University). Her research interests are situated between contemporary art production, digital culture, the making of commons, and performance of participation. Nuraini's research writings have been published widely in Indonesian media and cultural organisation (Tempo, Kompas, The Jakarta Post, Indonesian Visual Art Archive, Jakarta Art Council, Ruang Rupa), international art publications (Art Monthly Australia, Metropolis M, Afterall Journal, Discipline), and artists' book and monograph (Stedelijk Museum, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, South Project, Sternberg Press), and refereed academic journal (Jurnal Perempuan, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies). In collaboration with KUNCI, she has produced a body of works, which use research, publication, exhibition, presentation, and gathering as modes of intellectual and political engagement. Her expertise has been used to design and facilitate visual art and cultural community workshops in Indonesia, other parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, and Europe. Currently Nuraini developed her own project titled Domestic Notes. Domestic Notes is a publication-based project uses domestic and migrant spaces as sites to discuss everyday politics, gender, organisation of makeshift support system, and alternative cultural production. Together with Andy Fuller, she co-run Reading Sideways Press, a Melbourne-based small press which publishes books and zines on art, sports, and literature. She lives and works in Melbourne, Australia, and elsewhere.
